Exam Results

As thousands of young people across Scotland receive their exam results, it is natural that there will be a mix of emotions in homes across North East Fife. For some, it will bring celebration. For others, there may be disappointment or uncertainty. But one message is worth repeating: there is no single "right" path to success. My own path to becoming an MP was very varied – which I’m generally told is a good thing!

Exam results can open doors, but they do not define a person's potential or determine the rest of their life. Across North East Fife, young people have opportunities in hospitality, tourism, retail, healthcare, agriculture, technology and the growing renewable energy sector. Apprenticeships and college courses offer valuable skills and paid work experience, while local businesses are always looking for talented and motivated young people willing to learn.

For those considering higher education, we are fortunate to have one of the world's leading universities on our doorstep. The University of St Andrews attracts students from across the world and offers opportunities not only for study but also for employment, internships and research.

I saw that ambition and potential first-hand during my recent visit to the Sutton Trust UK Summer School at the University of St Andrews. The programme gives academically able young people from lower-income backgrounds the chance to experience university life, explore subjects in greater depth and build confidence about their future options. This year's summer school welcomed 140 students studying subjects ranging from Medicine and Chemistry to Classics and Sustainable Development, with many participants being the first in their family to consider university.

I was particularly inspired by speaking to students about their hopes for the future and meeting Sutton Trust alumnus Josh Rankin, who attended the programme himself before studying at the University of St Andrews and returning as a Summer School Ambassador. His story demonstrates how opportunity can transform lives.

Organisations such as the Sutton Trust and the 93% Club are helping to break down barriers and ensure that talented young people from state school backgrounds feel they belong in higher education if they choose that route. But the wider message is bigger than university alone.

Whether your next step is a degree, an apprenticeship, college, training, starting a business or entering the workplace, there is no wrong path. North East Fife offers opportunities in every direction. This week’s results are just one milestone on a much longer journey, and there are many exciting routes ahead.
