Supporting Our Local Community

As North East Fife enjoys another busy summer season, it is worth reflecting on what a new government under Andy Burnham as Prime Minister could mean for communities like ours.

From the East Neuk Festival's world-class performances to Promfest in Leven, village galas, agricultural shows and exploring our wonderful coastline, the things to do are endless! Cafés, pubs, restaurants, guest houses, farm shops and independent retailers all benefit from the influx of tourists who come to enjoy everything our corner of Scotland has to offer.

Yet beneath the postcard-perfect scenes lies a growing challenge. I know from hosting roundtables for small, local businesses around the constituency to come together and discuss the challenges they face, that many are struggling with rising costs, labour shortages and tax burdens that make it increasingly difficult to operate profitably. These are the businesses that give North East Fife its character and create jobs throughout our communities. That’s why the Liberal Democrats are calling for a dedicated Coastal Communities Minister, ensuring that coastal towns have a strong voice in government and receive the targeted support they need to address their unique challenges.

If an Andy Burnham government is serious about rebalancing the economy, supporting towns and rural areas must be at the heart of its agenda. One practical step would be reducing VAT for hospitality and tourism businesses. In seasonal economies, businesses have only a limited window each year to generate the income needed to survive quieter months. Lower VAT would allow them to invest, employ more staff and remain competitive.

Business rates relief is another essential measure. Independent traders are the backbone of our high streets, yet they often face costs that larger national chains are better equipped to absorb. Targeted relief would help keep local shops, cafés and restaurants thriving.

Vitally, the new government needs to improve Britain's relationship with Europe. This is not about revisiting old political battles but recognising practical realities. Hospitality, tourism and agriculture all depend heavily on seasonal workers. Easier mobility arrangements and stronger cooperation with European partners would help employers fill vacancies and support economic growth. It would also make it easier for people to visit without having to worry about visas.

I’m looking forward to attending lots of events across the patch this summer - the festivals, events and businesses that make our area special deserve a government that understands their value. If Andy Burnham wants to build a fairer and more prosperous Britain for people in every postcode, backing local businesses through VAT cuts, business rates relief and improved ties with Europe would be an excellent place to start.
