Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme

The UPE scheme will open to applications at 9:00am UK time on 4 February 2025. Visa holders have 28 days to apply to the Ukraine Visa Scheme. If an applicant wishes to maintain their benefits and entitlements, then it is crucial that applicants apply within this timeframe.

If you’re a Ukrainian national, or the family member of a Ukrainian national, and are living in the UK with existing permission on one of the Ukraine schemes, you may be eligible to apply for UPE to continue living in the UK for up to a further 18 months.

Visa holders have 28 days to apply to the Ukraine Visa Scheme (from when their current visa expires).

It will be free to apply. You will need to make an application online. If your application is successful, you will be able to continue to live, work and study in the UK and access public funds.

IMPORTANT: Visa holders must apply to UPE themselves; they will not be auto enrolled.

Who can apply

To apply to the Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme you must already have been granted permission under one of the other Ukraine Schemes. This means that you must have been granted permission to stay in the UK under either the:

  • Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine)

  • Ukraine Family Scheme

  • Ukraine Extension Scheme

You may also be eligible to apply to the Ukraine Permission Extension scheme if you have been granted permission to stay in certain circumstances.

You must also:

  • be in the UK when making an application

  • have been living in the UK (and Islands, which includes Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man) since you were granted, or arrived in the UK, with permission under the Ukraine Schemes.

IMPORTANT - when can you apply?

Applicants must apply to UPE before their current visa expires - they cannot apply before this.

  • For example, if an applicant’s visa is due to expire on the 4th of April 2025, they can apply to UPE from the 7th of March 2025, but they cannot apply before this.

  • If an applicant applies too early, their application may be rejected or not considered – the applicant will then have to reapply.

  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to be aware of when their current visa expires.

  • Applicants whose visas expire before they receive a decision will continue their permissions and entitlements while their applications are reviewed.

  • Late applications will be considered however, applicants will lose their existing benefits and entitlements until a decision on their application is made.

  • Entitlements will not be re-instated before an application decision is made.

  • Applicants are encouraged to hold-onto their existing BRP card if they have one. This may save the applicant from having to attend a visa application centre to re-enrol their biometrics.

How long will visas be extended for?

Visas will be extended by 18 months.

  • Extensions will begin from the point of decision.

  • Decisions are expected to be made within 8 weeks.

Children

  • You can apply to the scheme for your child if they were born in the UK after 18 March 2022 to a Ukrainian national parent who holds permission to stay in the UK under the Ukraine Schemes.
