Calling for Urgent Action Over Detained Constituent

This week I have been working urgently to support Dr Antonis Vradis, a North East Fife resident and professor at the University of St Andrews, who was detained after the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla during its humanitarian mission to Gaza.

I was first alerted to the situation on Tuesday, when the University of St Andrews confirmed that the flotilla had been intercepted. Since then, I have taken every step available to me to ensure Dr Vradis’ safety and to press for his swift release.

I immediately made representations to the FCDO, and I welcome the news that the Israeli ambassador has now been summoned. The situation has rightly drawn international condemnation - particularly after far‑right National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir posted a video taunting detained activists who were kneeling with their hands bound. Reports of severe injuries and the use of Tasers are deeply alarming.

I have been in direct contact with Dr Vradis’ family throughout, pressing for assurances about his welfare and staying in close touch with the University of St Andrews. Reports from an activist organisation suggest that detainees may be deported to Turkey today, and I am seeking confirmation that safe onward travel home will be provided.

I also raised the issue directly in the House of Commons during an Urgent Question on the Middle East, asking the Minister whether the concerns raised by the flotilla had been addressed in discussions with the Israeli Chargé d’Affaires.

You can watch the exchange here:

In Parliament, I have tabled a motion expressing grave concern for the safety of British nationals detained during the interception and calling on the UK Government to confirm what steps are being taken to guarantee their immediate release. The motion also urges the Government to press Israel to reopen all aid routes into Gaza to allow the unimpeded flow of food, medical supplies and humanitarian assistance.
