Strengthening Ties with Europe

With Parliament back in full swing after Conference Recess, there are many important debates and pieces of legislation before us. One issue firmly at the forefront is the UK's relationship with the European Union, with the Government setting out its ambition to rebuild stronger ties with our European neighbours.

This is something the Liberal Democrats have long called for, and it is particularly important for communities like ours, where agriculture remains a vital part of the local economy. Farmers and agricultural businesses across North East Fife continue to face challenges arising from our post-Brexit trading arrangements, and it is important that their voices are heard as discussions about our future relationship with the EU continue.

As a result, I am hosting a roundtable for local agricultural businesses on 20th November. I am keen to hear directly about their experiences and any concerns they may have. You can sign up to attend by emailing me at wendy.chamberlain.mp@parliament.uk. If you cannot attend but would like to raise an issue with me, please do get in touch.

Our relationship with Europe is also important when it comes to seasonal agricultural workers, who play a vital role in supporting our farming sector. I know that European cooperation remains an issue many people across North East Fife care deeply about, with the constituency having voted to remain in the European Union in the 2016 referendum.

That commitment to engagement beyond our borders is reflected in North East Fife's proud history of supporting peacebuilding and international cooperation. Earlier this month, we marked the 20th anniversary of the St Andrews Agreement, a landmark moment in the Northern Ireland peace process. The agreement created a pathway to the restoration of devolved government and power-sharing, helping to secure political stability and laying foundations that continue to shape public life in Northern Ireland today.

International affairs continue to matter greatly to many constituents. In recent months, I have received more than 2,800 emails regarding Palestine, as well as correspondence concerning Afghanistan. As Chair of the APPG for Afghan Women and Girls, I have seen first-hand the urgent need to support those facing persecution. I therefore welcome the proposed refugee route for Afghan women and girls, who continue to face severe oppression and the systematic denial of their rights under Taliban rule, as well as measures to support Palestinians seeking protection.
