Carers' Leave

Yesterday, the Government published a statement on carers’ leave in relation to the Employment Rights Act, confirming that a consultation will be launched on the future of carers’ leave.
This consultation seeks views on how current policies can be strengthened and expanded, including the potential introduction of paid carers leave. I strongly encourage carers, employers, stakeholders and members of the public to engage with this important process. The consultation can be accessed here.
The Carer’s Leave Act, which I was proud to steer through Parliament, marked a vital first step in recognising the invaluable contribution of unpaid carers. It established the right for employees to take time away from work to care for relatives and loved ones at critical moments. However, this must be the foundation, not the limit, of our ambition.
The next logical step is the introduction of paid carers’ leave. At present, too many carers are forced to make an impossible choice between their income and their responsibilities at home. Making carers’ leave paid would provide meaningful support, particularly for those on lower incomes who simply cannot afford to take unpaid time off.
This consultation is an opportunity to deliver meaningful progress. Carers are the backbone of our families, our communities and our health and care system. They deserve not only recognition, but tangible support that reflects the essential role they play every day. Introducing paid carers’ leave would be a transformative step in achieving that goal.
