Update - St Andrews' Post Office

I was disappointed to receive confirmation that the St Andrews Post Office will be closing as part of Modella Capital's restructuring programme.

Following discussions with representatives from the Post Office, I understand that Modella Capital expects the TG Jones branch in St Andrews to close in January. During my meeting with Post Office officials, I made it clear just how important it is that St Andrews continues to have a Post Office presence. I also pressed the need for suitable interim arrangements to be put in place so that local residents and businesses can continue to access essential services while a new operator is identified.

The Post Office is currently seeking a new partner to take on the running of the branch, and I would encourage anyone who may be interested in this opportunity to consider applying.

I have been assured that work is already underway to find a new operator, and I understand that further information will be available next week. As soon as I receive that update, I will share it with constituents.

St Andrews relies on its Post Office for much more than sending and receiving mail. It provides vital access to cash and banking services and is particularly important for people who may find it difficult to access services online or travel to another town. That is why I will continue engaging with the Post Office and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the community's needs are properly represented throughout this process.

Councillor Jane Ann Liston has rightly highlighted the significance of this issue for St Andrews. As one of Fife's largest communities, a university town and a major tourism destination, St Andrews depends on having accessible Post Office services. The Post Office previously indicated that contingency plans existed should services be affected, and I agree that it is important that those plans are now made clear and implemented where necessary.

Councillor Al Clark has also expressed disappointment at the limited notice given for the closure and has emphasised the importance of the branch for local banking and everyday services. Alongside local councillors and community stakeholders, I will continue working to explore alternative solutions and ensure that the community retains access to the services it needs.
