Holding Tesco to Account on Local Fuel Prices

Over recent months, constituents in North East Fife have raised concerns about the differences in fuel prices at Tesco petrol stations in Cupar compared to Riverside, Dundee.

This is causing understandable frustration and, with the cost of living crisis still hitting families hard, unfair fuel pricing only adds further strain on commuters, small businesses, and rural residents who have to rely on their cars.

That’s why Councillor Margaret Kennedy and I have been taking action, we have:

• Compared price differences by requesting data for the two Tesco sites covering a year, highlighting a clear and consistent disparity.

• Contacted Tesco’s corporate office to request an explanation for the price differences and push for fairer, more transparent pricing across North East Fife.

• Raised the issue with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to highlight potential concerns over pricing practices and local market competition.

• Met with local residents gather evidence and keep pressure on decision-makers.

  
  

While Tesco have so far failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, we remain committed to pressing the issue. Rural and small-town communities should not be paying more for essential services like fuel, simply because they have fewer public transport options.

We are continuing to pursue this issue both locally and nationally, and we’ll provide updates as soon as we receive further responses from Tesco or the CMA.
