Scrap Mandatory Digital ID

Over the past few weeks, one of the issues which has dominated my inbox is the Government’s proposed mandatory digital ID policy. The strength of feeling against this across North East Fife has been extraordinary - 3,412 local people have signed the national petition, joining nearly three million voices across the UK calling for the plans to be scrapped.
Â
For me, one of the most troubling aspects is what this scheme could mean for those who are already digitally excluded. Across the UK, around 8.5 million people lack basic digital skills - including many elderly and disabled people. A mandatory digital ID risks shutting those people out of work, healthcare, public services, and participation in everyday life. That is simply unacceptable.
Â
We cannot allow the Government to create a system where sharing your identity with the state becomes a prerequisite for getting a job or accessing support. The public have overwhelming and legitimate concerns, yet ministers seem determined to push ahead regardless.
Â
As the Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for North East Fife, I will continue to press the Government to listen. My constituents have made their views clear, and I share them: mandatory digital IDs must be scrapped.
