Over recent weeks, I have been in contact with a number of businesses in Lundin Links who have been significantly impacted by ongoing roadworks in the area. Many have shared their concerns with me directly, and it’s clear that the disruption has had a serious effect on footfall and income.

Some businesses have described the situation as severe, with one local shopkeeper reporting they had lost around half of their daily income during the works. For small, independent businesses, that kind of loss is incredibly difficult to sustain.

That’s why I welcomed the recent visit from representatives of SGN, who came to Lundin Links to hear directly from business owners about the challenges they are facing. It is vital that organisations responsible for these works take the time to listen to those affected and understand the real-world impact of disruption.

I have also been engaging with SGN to ensure that businesses are supported through this period, including confirming that they will help work through the compensation claims process. However, I have heard clearly from local businesses that the current compensation scheme is not easily accessible, with many feeling that the criteria are unreasonable and difficult to meet. That is not right, and it needs to be addressed.

Alongside this, concerns have also been raised about communication. Businesses have highlighted a lack of notice before works began, as well as frustration at periods of inactivity despite the works being described as an “emergency.” Better communication, clearer timelines and more transparency would go a long way in helping businesses plan and manage during disruption.

As local councillor Eugene Clarke has also highlighted, there is real scope for improvement in how utility companies consult with communities and businesses before undertaking extended works. This is not just about responding once problems arise, it’s about getting the process right from the outset.

Our local high streets are at the heart of our communities. They are not only places of business, but spaces where people connect and communities thrive. When major infrastructure works take place, it is essential that those businesses are properly supported.

While I welcome the engagement from SGN, it must lead to meaningful action. Businesses need to see improvements in communication, fair access to compensation, and practical steps to minimise disruption wherever possible.

I will continue to work with local businesses and SGN to ensure that concerns are addressed and that lessons are learned for the future. In the meantime, I would encourage any affected businesses to get in touch and share their experiences so that I can continue to raise these issues on their behalf.
